Tim Walz is an American politician, former U.S. Army non-commissioned officer, and retired educator. He has been the governor of Minnesota since 2019 and is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. In 2006, Walz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Minnesota’s 1st congressional district. He was reelected five times before becoming governor in 2019. He was reelected as governor in 2022 and defeated Republican Scott Jensen.

Tim Walz graduated from Butte High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in social science education from Chadron State College in 1989. He started teaching at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, then taught in China with WorldTeach. In 2001, he completed a Master’s in educational leadership from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Walz joined the Army National Guard in 1981 and served 24 years, with postings in various locations including Arkansas, Texas, the Arctic Circle, and Minnesota. He worked in heavy artillery and participated in disaster response efforts. He earned the title of Nebraska Citizen-Soldier of the Year in 1989.

Near the end of his military career, he became a command sergeant major but retired as a master sergeant in 2005. After retiring from the military, he resumed teaching geography and coaching football at Mankato West High School.
