Sukhbir Singh is a former 1988 batch of Indian Administrative Services who belongs to the Uttrakhand cadre, although he hails from Punjab. Before, working as the top official in Uttarakhand, Sandhu became the Chief Secretary when Pushkar Singh Dhami became the Chief Minister in 2021 and stayed in the office until January 31, 2024.

Then, on February 1, 2024, he took the oath as the Secretary to the Lokpal for a year. But he left the office on March 13, 2024. After that, on 14 March 2024, he became the Election Commissioner of India.

Earlier, Sandhu held the chief position at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). He also worked as an additional secretary in the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development. He also got a Master’s Degree in History from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and a law degree.
