Sambit Patra Career

Patra began his political journey in 2010 by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a spokesperson in Delhi. Despite losing in the 2012 municipal election, he quit his job to focus on politics. He gained national attention during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections while campaigning for the BJP.

After the party’s victory, he became a national spokesperson. Additionally, in 2017, he was appointed as a non-official director of ONGC. In 2019, he contested the Puri Lok Sabha seat but lost to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate by a narrow margin.

In September 2017, Patra was chosen as an independent director for the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) Board, serving a three-year term. However, his dual role as a spokesperson for the ruling party, BJP, sparked controversy. An NGO, Energy Watchdog, challenged this appointment in the Delhi High Court, alleging violations of the Companies Act and flaws in the selection process.

In November 2017, the High Court dismissed the petition, deeming it baseless and unsubstantiated. The court defended Patra’s ability to carry out his duties impartially despite his political affiliation. Subsequently, the Supreme Court instructed the NGO to provide a copy of the petition to the Union of India, postponing further proceedings for a later date.
