Zach Lowe Career
For almost four years, starting in August 2004, Lowe worked as a reporter covering crime, government, and courts for the Stamford Advocate. After that, he spent two years at The American Lawyer. During this time, he also contributed part-time to the fan blog CelticsHub.com. Lowe credits Rob Neyer and John Hollinger for inspiring his analytical approach to sports writing and his journalism skills were shaped by his early reporting experience.
In 2010, he launched the “Point Forward” NBA blog for Sports Illustrated. Two years later, Bill Simmons hired him as an NBA analyst for Grantland. When Grantland shut down in 2015, ESPN, its parent company, extended his contract. In 2016, although Bleacher Report showed interest, he chose to stay with ESPN.
Lowe hosts a weekly podcast called “The Lowe Post,” where he talks about the NBA with journalists, players, and coaches. He also writes a weekly column for ESPN during the NBA season titled “Ten Things I Like And Don’t Like.” In 2016, he moderated a basketball analytics panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. On September 26, 2024, ESPN let Lowe go as part of broader layoffs.
Lowe is known for his in-depth basketball analysis, often using video clips to support his clear and balanced writing. He covers the entire NBA, rather than focusing on a single team. His time as a court reporter shaped his fair and evidence-based approach. In 2013, Will Leitch called Lowe “one of the best basketball writers” and “the most interesting,” while Slate’s Josh Levin named him “America’s best sports writer.” 3wikipediaÂ
