Sharath Kamal is a professional Indian table tennis player who is the first Indian to become a ten-time Senior National Champion. In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Shri, and in 2022, he received the Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honor. Sharath was ranked 32 in the ITTF world ranking, he has notable victories against world no. 8 Joo Se Hyuk and world no. 16 Chuang Chih-yuan at the 2015 Asian Cup.

Sharath won the men’s singles gold at the 2004 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship. He also won a gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and helped India secure the team gold. He teamed up with Subhajit Saha to win the men’s doubles gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. Sharath Kamal’s Career Journey

At 20, Sharath was selected for a training camp before the 2002 Commonwealth Games, which boosted his confidence and skills. Though not selected for the main squad, he made it to the final of the senior national championships in 2002 and was soon drafted into the national team.

Sharath debuted at the 2003 World Table Tennis Championships with teammates Chetan Baboor and Sourav Chakraborty. He won his first group stage match against Tahiti’s Sylvain Motahu and his men’s doubles match with Chetan Baboor. However, he lost in mixed doubles and later in singles against France’s Christophe Legout.

In 2004, Sharath participated in the World Team Table Tennis Championships and the South Asian Games, winning multiple medals including a team gold. He also won his first international singles gold at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships and qualified for the 2004 Olympics, where he won his first-round match but lost in the second round.

At the 2005 World Table Tennis Championships, Sharath faced a first-round exit in singles but won his first match in the mixed doubles event. Sharath Kamal won two gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in singles and team events. He made his Asian Games debut but faced early exits in singles and doubles.

In 2007, Sharath became the first Indian to win the Pyongyang Invitational Tournament. He also performed well at the Japan Pro Tour and the World Championships, achieving his first match win in doubles. Sharath qualified for the 2008 Olympics, winning his first-round match but losing in the second round. Sharath won gold in men’s doubles at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and secured his first Pro Tour title.

In 2018, Sharath Kamal won multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games, including gold in the team event, silver in men’s doubles, and bronze in men’s singles. Sharath won the ITTF Challenger Plus Oman Open men’s singles title in 2020, his first title in ten years.

Sharath reached the third round at the 2021 Olympics and won a bronze at the Asian Championships. Sharath competed in various international tournaments, winning a bronze at WTT Contender Doha 2022. He celebrated his 40th birthday with a strong performance at the WTT Star Contender European Series.

Sharath’s team, Chennai Lions, finished second in Ultimate Table Tennis season 4. His world ranking dropped to 106, marking his first exit from the top 100 since 2007.
