Riyan’s mother, Mithoo Barooah, is a former national record-holding swimmer in the 50m freestyle who represented India at the Asian Championships and SAF Games. Riyan made his Twenty20 debut for Assam in January 2017 and his first-class debut in November 2017 and became the first Indian cricketer born in the 21st century to do so. In 2017, he played for India’s Under-19 team and was a top run-scorer in youth Tests in England. He was also the second-highest run-scorer in the 2016-17 Cooch Behar Trophy.
Parag was part of India’s squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Despite his injury, he led Assam in runs during the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. In December 2018, Rajasthan Royals bought him for the 2019 Indian Premier League, where he became the youngest player to score a fifty.
Although released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2022 IPL, they re-bought him. Parag took the most catches by any Indian fielder and scored a match-winning 56 not out in 2022. In the 2022-23 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he was Assam’s top run-scorer and also took 10 wickets. During the 2023 Deodhar Trophy, he was Player of the Series and set a record for the most sixes in an innings.
In the 2023–24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he was the highest run-scorer and six-hitter, becoming the first cricketer to score seven consecutive half-centuries in T20 cricket. He also scored consecutive centuries in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy and was honored with the Lala Amarnath best all-rounder award for the 2022-23 season.
Parag played in the 2023 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup final and was the top run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2024 season. He made history by scoring the most runs in a single season while batting at number four.
