Mike McCarthy is an American football coach, who was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 to 2024 and led the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018. In 2011, he coached the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Before becoming a head coach, McCarthy was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. He is one of five coaches to take one team to eight consecutive playoff appearances and ranks second in all-time wins for the Packers, behind Curly Lambeau.

Mike McCarthy went to St. Rosalia School, where he played basketball and later supported the school with donations. He attended Bishop Boyle High School afterward. After high school, Mike attended Salem University in West Virginia but later returned home to work at his father’s bar. In 1984, he joined Scottsdale Community College in Arizona, playing one season of football for the Fighting Artichokes. Kansas City Chiefs

In 1993 McCarthy joined the Kansas City Chiefs as an offensive quality control assistant under head coach Marty Schottenheimer. For two years, he contributed to the team and worked with Joe Montana. In 1995, Mike became the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach.

Green Bay Packers

After Schottenheimer left the Chiefs in 1998, McCarthy became the quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers. There, he worked with Brett Favre, who threw for 4,091 yards in 1999, one of the best seasons of his career.

New Orleans Saints

In 2000, Mike became the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. That season, the team achieved a 10–6 record and won their first playoff game, finishing 10th in overall offense. McCarthy was named NFC Assistant Coach of the Year by USA Today. During his tenure, the Saints set 35 offensive records and he stayed with the Saints through the 2004 season.

San Francisco 49ers

In 2005, Mike served as offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers under head coach Mike Nolan. Despite challenges, including a rookie quarterback, and limited offensive success, running back Frank Gore emerged as a rising star, and wide receiver Brandon Lloyd had a solid season.

Dallas Cowboys

Mike McCarthy interviewed for the head coach position in a 12-hour meeting with owner Jerry Jones and other team executives. On January 7, 2020, McCarthy was named head coach.

His debut season started with a 20–17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams but followed with a 40–39 win against the Atlanta Falcons. Mike was fined $50,000 for violating practice rules during team activities. The Cowboys were featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks during training camp. Under McCarthy, the team went 12–5, won the NFC East, and swept the division for the first time since 1998.

Before the season, McCarthy was fined $100,000 for practice violations. He led the Cowboys to a wild-card win against the Buccaneers but lost in the divisional round to the 49ers.
