Laurie Hernandez is a retired American artistic gymnast. In her first year as a senior gymnast, she was part of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, known as the “Final Five,” which won the team gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She also won a silver medal on the balance beam.

Beyond gymnastics, Hernandez won season 23 of Dancing with the Stars in 2016 with her partner Val Chmerkovskiy. She hosted the first season of American Ninja Warrior Junior and voiced Valeria in the Nickelodeon animated miniseries Middle School Moguls. In 2016, Lauris reached the senior elite level of competitive gymnastics. At the U.S. national championships, she placed third in the all-around and won bronze medals in the uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise.

At the U.S. Olympic trials, she placed second overall, won the balance beam, and took third in the floor exercise, and earned a spot on the “Final Five” Olympic team. She was the youngest member and the first U.S. Latina gymnast to qualify for the Olympics. In Rio, she helped the U.S. team win gold and won a silver medal in the individual balance beam event.

After the Olympics, Hernandez took a break from gymnastics. She won Dancing with the Stars in 2016 with Val Chmerkovskiy and became the youngest winner at 16. She wrote I Got This: To Gold and Beyond and the children’s book She’s Got This.

In 2018, she was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame and spoke out about athletes’ mental health. In 2020, she revealed emotional abuse by her former coach, Maggie Haney, who was suspended for eight years.
