Isaiah Hartenstein is a German-American professional basketball player who plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association (NBA). NBA center drafted in the second round in 2017 by the Houston Rockets. In July 2022, he signed a multi-year deal with the New York Knicks. He has also played for the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Clippers.

Artland Dragons

Isaiah Hartenstein started in the youth ranks of MTV Gießen and then moved to the youth teams of QTSV Quakenbrück/Artland Dragons when his father joined the Artland Dragons in 2009.

In the 2013–14 season, Hartenstein led the Artland Dragons’ junior team to a German Under-16 championship, earning MVP honors. His father was the team’s head coach and was named JBBL Coach of the Year.

Hartenstein played in the 2014 Jordan Brand Classic International Game, scoring four points and grabbing five rebounds in 18 minutes. He also helped the Žalgiris Kaunas Under-18 team win a Euroleague Basketball Next Generation Tournament qualifier, being named MVP.

In February 2015, Isaiah debuted in Germany’s top-tier Basketball Bundesliga and played 1:12 minutes against Eisbären Bremerhaven.

Žalgiris Kaunas

In August 2015, Hartenstein signed with Žalgiris Kaunas but stayed on loan with the Artland Dragons. During the 2015–16 season, he played 14 games for the Dragons. In January 2016, he joined Žalgiris Kaunas.

Hartenstein made his LKL debut for Žalgiris in September 2016, against Šiauliai, and his EuroLeague debut on October 26 against Fenerbahce. He later helped Žalgiris win their first King Mindaugas Cup.

Houston Rockets

In February 2016, Isaiah attended the “Basketball Without Borders Global Camp” during the NBA All-Star Weekend in Toronto. He scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds at the Nike Hoop Summit on April 7, 2017.

Hartenstein declared for the 2017 NBA draft and was picked 43rd overall by the Houston Rockets. He played in the 2017 NBA Summer League and spent the 2017–18 season in the NBA G League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

The Rockets signed Hartenstein on July 25, 2018. He was suspended for one game after leaving the bench during an altercation on December 17, 2019. On February 7, 2019, he recorded his first triple-double. He helped the Vipers win the NBA G League championship and was named Finals MVP. On June 23, 2020, the Rockets waived Hartenstein.

On November 30, 2020, the Denver Nuggets signed Hartenstein. He averaged 9 minutes, 3.5 points, and 2.8 rebounds per game.

Cleveland Cavaliers

On March 25, 2021, Hartenstein and two future second-round picks were traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers for JaVale McGee. In his first twelve games with the Cavaliers, he averaged 9 points, 7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game in 19 minutes.

Hartenstein signed with the Los Angeles Clippers on September 27, 2021.

In July 2022, Hartenstein signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the New York Knicks.

National Team Career

Isaiah Hartenstein represented Germany at the 2014 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship and the 2015 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. He helped Germany to a fourth-place finish at the 2016 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, earning a spot in the All-Star Five.
