Cody Bellinger’s Career Journey
The Los Angeles Dodgers picked Cody Bellinger in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Although he had committed to play for the Oregon Ducks, he chose to sign with the Dodgers for a $700,000 bonus.
Cody started with the Rookie League AZL Dodgers, where he hit .210 with one home run and 30 RBIs in 47 games. The next year, he improved with the Ogden Raptors, hitting .328 with 34 RBIs in 46 games.
In 2015, Bellinger played his first full season with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in Class A-Advanced. He gained attention with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs, helping the Quakes win the California League championship and earning the Finals MVP.
In 2016, Bellinger started with the Double-A Tulsa Drillers but missed time due to a hip injury. He hit 23 home runs in 114 games and earned a late-season promotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he hit three home runs in three games. He also excelled in the Arizona Fall League, batting .314 with three home runs and earning a spot on the AFL Top Prospects Team.
During the 2019–20 offseason, Cody signed an $11.5 million deal with the Dodgers, setting a record for a first-year arbitration contract. However, his performance dipped with a .239 batting average, 12 home runs, and a .789 OPS.
In the playoffs, Cody made contributions, including a memorable catch against Fernando Tatis Jr. and a home run in the NLCS. The Dodgers won the World Series, their first since 1988. Afterward, he signed a $16.1 million contract for 2021.
Bellinger returned in 2021 but suffered more injuries, including a fractured fibula and a rib fracture. These setbacks led to his worst offensive season, with a .165 batting average, 10 home runs, and 36 RBIs.
In December 2022, Cody Bellinger signed a $17 million contract with the Dodgers to avoid arbitration. However, he struggled in 2022, hitting .210 with 19 home runs and 68 RBIs, and had the lowest on-base percentage in MLB at .265. After the season, the Dodgers non-tendered him and made him a free agent.
Bellinger signed a one-year deal with the Cubs in December 2022. He had an impressive 2023 season and earned NL Player of the Month for July and finished with a .307 batting average, 26 home runs, and 97 RBIs.
In February 2024, he re-signed with the Cubs on a three-year, $80 million deal with opt-out options. That year, he hit .266 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs but chose to stay with the Cubs after the season.
On December 17, 2024, the Cubs traded Bellinger to the Yankees, along with $5 million, in exchange for Cody Poteet. 3wikipedia4Â Â
