Arshad Nadeem is a Pakistani javelin thrower, who became the Olympic champion in Men’s javelin at the 2024 Summer Olympics with a record throw of 92.97 meters. Arshad is a two-time Olympian and the first Pakistani to reach the final in any track and field event at both the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships.

In 2022, he set a national and Commonwealth Games record with a 90.18-meter throw, which made him the first South Asian athlete to cross the 90-meter mark. In 2023, he won a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships and became the first Pakistani to achieve this.

Arshad Nadeem is a talented athlete, participating in various sports like cricket, badminton, football, and athletics, with a particular love for cricket, even playing in district-level tape-ball tournaments.

In grade seven, he was noticed by Rasheed Ahmad Saqi during a school athletics competition and then he began to mentor Arshad. Before focusing on javelin throw, Arshad also tried shot put and discus throw. Winning gold medals in the javelin throw at the Punjab Youth Festivals and an inter-board competition helped him gain national attention, leading to offers from top domestic teams like the Army, Air Force, and WAPDA.

Arshad Nadeem’s Career Journey

Arshad began competing in the javelin throw in 2015. In 2016, he received a scholarship from World Athletics to train in Mauritius. He won a bronze medal at the South Asian Games in India and set a national record with a throw of 78.33 meters. He also won another bronze at the Asian Junior Athletics Championship in Vietnam.

In 2017, Arshad earned a bronze medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Azerbaijan with a throw of 76.33 meters. In 2018, he improved his personal best to 80.45 meters during the Commonwealth Games in Australia, finishing eighth. Later that year, he set a new personal best and national record of 80.75 meters, winning a bronze at the Asian Games in Indonesia.

In 2019, Arshad set a new personal best and national record of 81.52 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Qatar, and later, a record 83.65 meters at the National Games in Pakistan. He won gold at the South Asian Games in Nepal with a throw of 86.29 meters.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, Arshad became the first Pakistani track and field athlete to qualify for the Olympics. He trained in his home’s courtyard due to a lack of facilities and finished fifth in the men’s javelin throw with a distance of 84.62 meters.

In 2022, Arshad trained in South Africa under the guidance of coach Terseus Liebenberg. He finished fifth at the World Athletics Championships in the USA with a throw of 86.16 meters. Later that year, he won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games with a throw of 90.18 meters, becoming the first South Asian to surpass the 90-meter mark. He also won gold at the Islamic Solidarity Games with a throw of 88.55 meters.

In 2023, Arshad won a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Hungary with a throw of 87.82 meters, securing his place in the 2024 Olympics. He also won a gold medal at the National Games in Pakistan but suffered a knee injury that prevented him from competing in the Asian Athletics Championships.
