After graduating from law school in 1996, Hunter Biden joined MBNA, a bank holding company, where he eventually became executive vice president by 1998. He briefly delayed starting at MBNA to help with his father’s Senate reelection campaign. After leaving MBNA in 1998, he worked at the U.S. Department of Commerce under President Bill Clinton, focusing on e-commerce policy.
In 2001, Hunter co-founded the lobbying firm Oldaker, Biden & Belair. At the same time, MBNA rehired him as a consultant, paying him $100,000 annually until 2005. This arrangement drew criticism because his father supported a bankruptcy law that benefited the credit card industry, including MBNA.
In 2006, President George W. Bush appointed Hunter to the Amtrak board of directors. He served as vice chairman from 2006 to 2009 but resigned shortly after his father became vice president, stating that he was ending his lobbying work.
In 2006, Hunter Biden and his uncle James bought the hedge fund Paradigm Global Advisors using an $8 million loan. The fund struggled and closed in 2010 after being promoted by a company linked to the troubled Stanford Financial Group.

On May 24, 2024, a final pre-trial hearing was held for Hunter Biden’s gun charges. The judge ruled that prosecutors could not mention his California tax trial, child support case in Arkansas, Navy discharge, or statements from a failed 2023 plea deal. However, they were allowed to discuss his drug use, parts of his memoir Beautiful Things, and data from his electronic devices.
The trial began on June 3, 2024. Hunter faced charges for illegally owning a gun as a drug user, lying on a federal form when buying the gun, and providing false information to a licensed gun dealer. The charges were linked to a gun he bought in October 2018. Three of his former partners testified about his drug use and the gun purchase. On June 11, Hunter was found guilty of three federal gun violations, becoming the first child of a sitting U.S. president to be convicted in a criminal trial. As a result, his law license in Washington, D.C., was suspended.
Hunter was set to be sentenced on December 12, 2024, but his father, President Joe Biden, pardoned him on December 1, 2024. 5wikipedia
