Karen Read is an American financial analyst from Mansfield, Massachusetts who is accused of allegedly hitting and killing her boyfriend, former Boston police officer John O’Keefe, during a snowstorm in January 2022.

O’Keefe, a Boston police officer, was dating Read. At the time of O’Keefe’s death, Read lived in Mansfield and they both started dating in 2019. She is unmarried and has no children.
On January 28, 2022, they went out with friends in Canton. Read says she drove O’Keefe to the home of another officer, Brian Albert. When O’Keefe didn’t come home and she couldn’t reach him, Read and two other women went looking for him.
They found his body in a snowbank outside Albert’s home around 6 a.m. on January 29. Prosecutors claim Read, who was allegedly drunk, hit him with her SUV. The defense says O’Keefe went inside the house, was killed in a fight, and then his body was put outside in the snow.
Karen Read’s Trial
Read’s trial was initially set for March 2024 but was moved to April. It began on April 16 with jury selection, which finished on April 24. Prosecutors asked the judge to prevent Read’s lawyers from blaming others for O’Keefe’s death. The judge allowed the defense to present evidence but barred this argument in opening statements.
The prosecution finished presenting their case on June 21 after eight weeks and 68 witnesses. The defense called six witnesses and rested on June 24. Closing arguments were on June 25, and the jury started deliberating the same day.
On July 1, after 25 hours of deliberation, the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous decision, so Judge Cannone declared a mistrial. The prosecution plans to retry the case.
