Michael Haley is an American businessman and an officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He was the first gentleman of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017. Currently, he is on active duty with the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in the Horn of Africa. He is married to Nikki Haley, who is a former governor of South Carolina, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and a candidate in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries.

Michael originally comes from Ohio. According to Nikki’s memoir, Michael’s biological father struggled with alcoholism and legal issues, and their home lacked electricity and running water. When Michael was a toddler, he and his four siblings were placed in foster care. Their mother was supposed to regain custody, but a car accident left her with a brain injury, which made her unable to care for them.
Michael and his siblings returned to foster care. Bill Haley, a director at a steel manufacturing plant, and Carol Haley, a school teacher, adopted 4-year-old Michael and his younger sister Lee Anne. His other three siblings were adopted by different families.

Michael worked at Exotica International, an upscale clothing store owned by his mother-in-law. He also spent eight years as a federal technician in various human resources positions with the South Carolina Army National Guard.
In January 2012, Haley was deployed to Afghanistan for six months as a captain in the South Carolina Army National Guard. His unit was stationed in Helmand Province, where they helped Afghan farmers improve farming techniques and develop cash crops to replace opium poppies.
Haley served as a liaison between the military and civilian authorities, and he was possibly the first governor’s spouse to serve on active duty in a war zone. The Marines in Helmand Province nicknamed him FGOSC (First Gentleman of South Carolina).
