Brittany Higgins is an Australian Liberal staffer who made headlines after alleging that she was raped by a colleague in Parliament House in 2019. She said that after she disclosed the assault, Senator Linda Reynolds and the Liberal Party abandoned her.
At the time, Brittany was new to her job as a Liberal Party staffer in Parliament House. Brittany accused former political staffer Bruce Lehrmann of raping her at Parliament House in Canberra. She claimed she was raped on the night of March 22, 2019, in Senator Linda Reynolds’ office.
Brittany stated that her boss, Reynolds, fired the alleged rapist on March 26, not because of the assault, but for breaching security. She felt her boss didn’t take the incident seriously due to its sensitive nature.
Although Brittany initially filed a case, she later withdrew it in 2019. She then transferred to work for the Employment, Skills, Small, and Family Business Minister, where she worked for a year. She later called out the Prime Minister for not taking any action against the case, and he publicly apologized to her.
“I was personally hurt by all these people that I loved, or, you know, worked with, that in my time of need when something horrendous happened, all these good people did nothing. And so I was so … I can’t explain how hurt I was that I was just abandoned like that.” 1theguardian
