Abulaban is accused of shooting and killing his wife, 28-year-old Ana Abulaban, and her friend, 29-year-old Rayburn Barron, in a San Diego luxury apartment on October 21, 2021.
Before the trial started this week, the judge and lawyers met Monday morning to finalize details. They confirmed that Ali plans to testify in his own defense, which is uncommon.
Abulaban was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and accused of using a gun. He also faced a special charge for committing multiple murders. The defense hoped the jury might find him guilty of second-degree murder, which would have led to a lighter sentence. Before gaining a large following on TikTok and YouTube, Ali worked as a senior IT Network Engineer for the federal government. Although this job paid the bills, Ali loved comedy and kept pursuing it on the side.
Ali joined the military at 21 and did basic training in San Antonio. He wanted to go into intelligence but didn’t want to wait a year, so he became a military police officer. After tech school, he was stationed at Kadena Airbase in Okinawa, Japan.
He was often harassed for being one of the few Arab-Americans in his unit. The job caused him social anxiety, and he started drinking heavily to cope until he met Ana Abulaban.
