Yeduguri Sandinti Jaganmohan Reddy’s father was Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) and Yeduguri Sandinti Vijayalakshmi, known as Y.S. Vijayamma. YSR was a powerful leader in the Indian National Congress and served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh twice.

His mother is Y. S. Vijayamma who was a homemaker, but now she is a politician. She represented Pulivendla in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and is currently the chairperson of the YSRCP.

Y.S. Reddy comes from a family deeply rooted in both politics and business, but he ventured into politics to follow the path laid by his grandfather and father. He began it by campaigning for the Indian National Congress during the 2004 elections in Kadapa District and gradually climbed the political ladder.

In 2009, he secured a seat as a Member of the Lok Sabha representing the Kadapa constituency in Andhra Pradesh, and served from June 1, 2009, to May 18, 2014. But the sudden accidental death of his father, the then-incumbent Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, in a helicopter crash changed the whole picture.

This event led many legislators to support Jaganmohan’s appointment as the new Chief Minister, although the Congress’s high command opposed the move. In response to these tragic events, Jaganmohan embarked on an Odarpu Yatra (condolence tour) across Andhra Pradesh and promised to meet with the families affected. However, despite his genuine intentions, the Congress leadership opposed the tour and ordered him to cancel it, but he refused to obey.

This refusal led to a fallout with the Congress’s high command, but the tour proved immensely successful and strengthened Jaganmohan’s position as a prominent political figure in the state. After this, Reddy felt mistreated by the Congress leaders, and his family got split because of political games.

Then, Jaganmohan and his mother resigned from their positions in the Congress party in November 2010. In December 2010, Jaganmohan announced the formation of a new political party, which came to be known as the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and he was its president.

The Congress party got weaker in the assembly and Lok Sabha, which led to by-elections. Reddy’s party won most of the seats with very big victories. He won by a lot of votes from the Kadapa constituency.

But then, there were some serious charges laid against him, they said Jaganmohan took a lot of money in bribes when his father was the chief minister. They arrested him in 2012 because of this and he was kept in jail for some time. His family said there was a plan against him by the government.

Jaganmohan also didn’t like the idea of splitting Andhra Pradesh to make Telangana. He even went on a hunger strike in jail to show he didn’t agree. His health got worse, but he kept going. After he got out of jail, he protested more and even quit his job in the government. He ran for election again in 2014, but his party lost.
