Marco Rubio’s Political Positions

While in law school, Marco Rubio interned for U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and worked on Senator Bob Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign. In 1998, he was elected as a city commissioner for West Miami. In 2000, Rubio joined the Florida House of Representatives.

As a state representative, Marco requested about $145 million in state funding for community projects in 2001 and 2002. These funds often supported health and social programs, which Rubio defended as necessary for the community.

Marco proposed cutting state property taxes to 2001 levels or possibly eliminating them, replacing the lost revenue by increasing sales taxes by 1% to 2.5% to fund schools. This plan aimed to reduce property taxes by $40–50 billion. While the proposal passed in the House, it faced opposition from Republicans, who argued the sales tax hike would hurt low-income people.

Marco Rubio

Rubio agreed to Crist’s plan to double the state property tax exemption from $25,000 to $50,000 and this measure, estimated to reduce taxes by $33 billion, was called the largest tax cut in Florida’s history at the time.

Marco Rubio is known for his conservative policies and strong foreign policy stances. He has consistently advocated for tax reform, limiting government spending, and supporting defense priorities. Rubio opposes the Affordable Care Act, net neutrality, and abortion, except in cases where the mother’s life is in danger. He supports raising the Social Security retirement age, expanding charter schools, and closing the federal Department of Education. On drug policy, he opposes recreational cannabis legalization but is open to non-psychoactive medical cannabis.

Rubio supports strong action against China and has been sanctioned by its government. He advocates for Taiwan’s independence and has pushed for sanctions against human rights violators. Rubio also supports Israel, condemning actions by groups like Hamas, and has backed Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, though he has recently called for a resolution to the war.

Despite early clashes with Donald Trump, Rubio has been a staunch supporter of most Trump administration policies. In November 2024, US President Donald Trump had chosen Marco as United States Secretary of State in his second administration and Rubio would be the first Latino to hold that role. 3wikipedia
