After his release, he became a central committee member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) and oversaw the Lumbini zone until 1990.
In 1991, after the People’s Movement, Oli was elected to the House of Representatives and later became the head of the foreign relations department of CPN (UML). Re-elected in 1994, he served as Minister for Home Affairs. In 1999, he was re-elected from Jhapa and held his seat in parliament.
Oli became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2006 and investigated the death of politician Madan Bhandari. Although he lost the 2008 election, he was elected from Jhapa-7 in 2013 and became the leader of the CPN (UML) parliamentary party. In 2014, he was elected party chairman.
Oli first became Prime Minister on October 11, 2015, but resigned in July 2016 after losing majority support. He was reappointed Prime Minister on February 15, 2018, and passed a constitutional amendment to include disputed territories in Nepal’s map in 2020. However, political infighting led to his resignation in July 2021.
In May 2021, Oli briefly became Prime Minister again but was removed by the Supreme Court. His party split later that year. After the 2022 election, Oli’s CPN (UML) became the second-largest party.
