Frankie Beverly was an American singer, songwriter, and producer best known for leading the soul and funk band Maze. He started the group in Philadelphia in 1970, originally called Raw Soul. After meeting Marvin Gaye, Maze gained a loyal fan base and released nine Gold albums. Beverly was the band’s lead singer, songwriter, and producer, recognized for his smooth baritone voice and engaging performances.
“I wish more people did know who I was, but if it’s at the expense of me giving up this thing we have, then I just have to wait until they find out,” he told the Baltimore Sun in 1994. “ ’Cause whatever we have, whatever this thing is that we seem to have a part of, it’s a cult kind of thing.” 1washingtonpost

Frankie Beverly Career
As a teenager, Frankie formed a short-lived doo-wop group called The Blenders, inspired by acts like The Dells and The Moonglows. After that, he started another group, The Butlers, and recorded with them in 1963. Their song “If That’s What You Wanted” became popular in the Northern soul scene. Producer Kenny Gamble noticed the group, but their style didn’t quite match the popular “Philly Sound.”
Then the group moved to California and changed their name to Raw Soul. Marvin Gaye’s sister-in-law discovered them, and Gaye featured them as his opening act, eventually suggesting a new name, Maze.
Maze gained more fans in the UK during the late 1970s and 1980s, especially with their hit “Joy and Pain.” In 2019, Beyoncé covered their song “Before I Let Go,” which Frankie Beverly described as one of the greatest moments of his career.
In 2009, his son Anthony, who played drums for Maze, and his former wife, entertainment attorney Heather Beverly, organized a tribute album called Silky Soul Music: An All-Star Tribute to Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly. They started a record label called Brantera to honor Maze’s legacy. Artists like Mary J. Blige, Babyface, and Mint Condition contributed to the album. 3wikipedia
