Klay chose to play college basketball at Washington State University under coach Tony Bennett. He started all 33 games as a freshman and made the Pac-10 All-Freshman team. In his sophomore and junior seasons, Thompson was named to the All-Pac-10 first team. In his junior year, he set the single-season scoring record at Washington State.
