After Roethlisberger’s retirement, Pickett was named the backup to Mitchell Trubisky on September 6, 2022.
Pickett debuted in Week 4 against the New York Jets, completing 10 of 13 passes for 120 yards, rushing for two touchdowns, but throwing three interceptions.
He was named the starter on October 4, 2022, and in his first start against the Buffalo Bills, he completed 34 of 51 passes for 327 yards and one interception. In Week 6, he threw his first touchdown pass to Najee Harris but exited the game with a concussion, though the Steelers won 20-18.
Pickett suffered another concussion in Week 14 against the Ravens, missed Week 15, but returned in Week 16 to throw a game-winning touchdown against the Raiders. He repeated this feat in Week 17 against the Ravens, becoming the first rookie quarterback to throw game-winning touchdowns in the final minute of two consecutive games. Pickett ended his rookie season with 2,404 passing yards, seven touchdowns, nine interceptions, and three rushing touchdowns in 13 games.
In Week 3, Pickett threw two touchdown passes in a win over the Raiders, his first multi-touchdown game. In Week 4, he sustained a bone bruise in a loss to the Texans. In Week 7, he scored his first rushing touchdown of the season in a win over the Rams. In Week 8, Pickett suffered a rib injury but returned four days later to lead a win over the Titans.
