Shamar Joseph’s Career Journey

Before his cricket career, Shamar worked with his family in the logging industry, cut down trees, and transported the timber down the Canje River to New Amsterdam. After a close incident, Joseph left Baracara and moved to New Amsterdam to find work to support his family.

In New Amsterdam, Joseph first worked in construction as a laborer, then took a job as a security guard at Scotiabank and worked 12-hour shifts that left little time for cricket. With the encouragement of his wife, he eventually decided to quit his job and focus entirely on his cricket career.

In December 2023, Shamar was one of seven uncapped players selected for the West Indies Test squad for their tour of Australia during the 2023–2025 ICC World Test Championship. He made his Test debut on 17 January 2024 in the first match of a two-game series against Australia. His impressive bowling spells against the Cricket Australia XI at the Karen Rolton Oval earned him a spot in the team.

In his debut innings, Joseph batted at number 11 and scored 36 runs from 41 balls, and formed a crucial last-wicket partnership with Kemar Roach to help West Indies reach a total of 188. This was the highest score by a West Indian number 11 on debut.

Joseph made an impact when he took a wicket with his very first delivery in Test cricket by dismissing Steve Smith and then Marnus Labuschagne and ended his debut match with a five-wicket haul, becoming the tenth West Indian to achieve this on debut.

Joseph was the second bowler in Test history to take a wicket with his first ball and a five-wicket haul in his first innings. He became the first West Indies player to score over 50 runs and take a five-wicket haul on debut.

In his second Test on 28 January 2024, Joseph took eight wickets, including a remarkable second-innings spell of 7/68 in 11.5 overs, leading West Indies to a thrilling victory. This win was West Indies’ first Test victory in Australia in 27 years.

He was also named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for January 2024, the first West Indian to receive this honor.
